Barn jackets in town: wear it or skip it?

The farm jacket has spent three seasons on the runway. Our ruling: wear it, but only one way.

Verdict: wear it

Wear it. The barn jacket is the most useful thing fashion has borrowed from the countryside, as long as you dress it like a city coat and not like a costume.

A barn jacket is a short, boxy coat in heavy cotton, usually with a corduroy collar and big front pockets. It was built for work: Carhartt sold its first barn coats in 1917, and the jacket spent most of the last century on farms rather than in magazines.1

That changed when designers started treating it as a blank canvas. Loewe turned the shape into a trapeze coat for spring 2023, Prada showed barn jackets over sharp tailoring in spring and again in autumn 2024, and Alexander McQueen cut one with a peplum for autumn 2024.1 For autumn 2026 the wider idea is called elevated utility: workwear reworked as something you would wear to dinner, a theme Fashion Brick Road picked out at Givenchy.2 Pinterest saw the same mood in search, where field jacket outfits for men rose by 65 percent.3

Why we say wear it

Because it solves a real problem. October is too cold for a blazer and too early for a wool coat. A barn jacket covers the gap, takes rain better than wool, and makes jeans look intentional. It is also the rare trend that ages well: a waxed or heavy cotton jacket looks better after two winters than on the first day.

The one rule

Wear it with something that does not belong on a farm. The jacket is the rough element; everything else should be smooth. That means a fine knit instead of a flannel shirt, a straight trouser instead of cargo pants, a leather ankle boot instead of a wellington. Think of it the way Prada did: work coat over good clothes. The moment you add a checked shirt, a gilet and hiking boots, you have stopped wearing a trend and started dressing for a hobby.

Rough jacket, smooth everything else. That is the whole trick.

Fit and colour

Choose a jacket that ends at the hip. Longer versions turn into a parka and lose the boxy line that makes the barn jacket look modern. Shoulders should sit where yours are; this is not an oversized piece. On colour, the classic olive and tan are safe for a reason. A yellow khaki, like Nanushka's waxed version below, is the more fashionable choice and still reads as neutral next to denim and ecru.

Who should skip it

If your wardrobe is mostly tailoring and you never wear jeans, a barn jacket will feel like a stranger. Choose a short wool jacket instead. And if you already own a good field jacket, you own the idea; you do not need both.

How to wear it this week

  • With an ecru turtleneck, dark straight jeans and brown suede boots.
  • Over a long knit skirt, with flat boots, for a softer version.
  • Open over a white shirt and tailored trousers on a Friday at the office.

The pieces below are chosen for that rule: one jacket to carry the trend, and smooth pieces to keep it in town.
