Dark romance for daylight: corsetry, lace, high necks

Dark romance is the most photographed mood of autumn 2026. Coveteur named it in its trend report: moody lace, corsetry and asymmetric hems at Ann Demeulemeester and Alexander McQueen, and jewel-toned lace minis at Saint Laurent.1 Mystylebox describes a modern romance of lace trims, ruffles, corsetry and Victorian references, from Dior to Zimmermann, and statement necklines, funnel and high necks, at Erdem, Givenchy and McQueen.2 Fashion Brick Road calls Dior's version radical romanticism: heavy winter outerwear with delicate ruffles.3

The three elements

• Lace. In dark colours: black, chocolate, bordeaux, deep green.
• Corsetry. A defined waist, a structured bodice, a peplum line. Not necessarily a real corset.
• High necks. Funnel necks, ruffled collars, buttoned-up blouses.

The daylight rule

Each romantic element needs a sober partner. That is exactly what Dior did, heavy coat over ruffles. In practice:

• Lace with wool. A lace top under a grey wool blazer, or a lace dress with a chunky knit pulled over it.
• Corsetry with a knit. A structured top over a fine turtleneck, so the waist is defined but the skin covered.
• High neck with denim. A high-necked blouse with straight jeans and flat boots.

Every romantic piece needs a sober partner.

Colours

Dark romance does not have to be black. Chocolate brown, which TheDoubleF names a defining colour of the season, softens it for daylight.4 Rouje's GABIN dress in grey lace and the LISERON in chocolate lace show the range.

Pinterest agrees

Pinterest saw lace moving into everyday clothes and named it "Laced Up" for 2026, with searches for lace details rising sharply, from lace nails at 215 percent to lace bandanas at 150 percent.5 Lace is no longer saved for occasions.

Shoes and bags

Knee boots are the natural partner: they make a lace dress look strong instead of sweet. Toteme's nappa over-the-knee boots in black are the strongest version. A small glazed leather bag keeps the evening shine in a daytime size.

What to avoid

Black lace, a corset, a high ruffled collar and a velvet coat at once. That is a costume. Two romantic elements are the limit for daylight.
