The skirt suit is back. Office or occasion?

Ferragamo, Tom Ford and Jil Sander sent skirt suits down the runway. We rule on where it belongs.

Verdict: the office

Office, with one condition: wear the two halves apart at least as often as together. A skirt suit worn only as a set is an outfit for one occasion; split, it is four.

The skirt suit was one of the clearest returns of the autumn 2026 shows. Coveteur saw it at Ferragamo, Tom Ford and Jil Sander, described the silhouettes as ladylike and noted details like asymmetric hems and off-kilter buttons.1 Mystylebox reported the pencil skirt coming back across the collections, from Gucci to Jil Sander, and a softer kind of tailoring, with relaxed suits replacing rigid ones.2

So the skirt suit is in. The question is where it lives in a real wardrobe.

The case for the occasion

A matching jacket and skirt looks polished at a wedding, a christening or a lunch where you want to be taken seriously. It photographs well and needs nothing else. If you want a suit for three dates a year, buy it as a set and keep it for those days.

The case for the office

The reason we rule for the office is economics. A blazer and a skirt that you wear apart give you a jacket for jeans, a jacket for trousers, a skirt for a knit, and the suit itself. That is four outfits for the price of one. The asymmetric hems and odd buttons the runway showed are exactly what makes each half interesting on its own.

Worn together, it is one outfit. Worn apart, it is four.

How to wear it now

  • Together: with a fine knit instead of a blouse, and flat loafers or knee boots instead of heels. That keeps it from looking like a costume from the 1980s.
  • Jacket alone: over a white shirt and straight jeans.
  • Skirt alone: with a chunky ecru turtleneck and suede ankle boots.

Length and shape

The modern skirt suit uses a pencil or a slightly A-line skirt that ends at or just below the knee. A mini skirt suit is louder and harder to wear apart. The jacket should be either short and boxy or long and lean; the middle length is the one that dates.

What we picked

The skirts below are all available as single pieces, which is how we suggest you shop the trend: start with a blazer you love, then find a skirt in a matching or tonal colour. Toteme's tailored blazer in black and the herringbone blazer in grey melange both work with the black and grey skirts listed. Rouje's skirts are the softer, more feminine route, if your office allows a little print.

Who should skip it

If you never wear skirts, do not start because of a runway. The softer trouser suits Mystylebox describes give you the same polish with less effort.2
